In the Kingdom of Baroque
Monastery libraries, Abbeys and Churches- In the Baroque age, the monasteries strived towards setting the sign of their power magnificently.

The Region
Upper Swabia is located in the south-east of Baden-Württemberg Province, and a little part of it is also found in the south-west of Bavaria between the Danube River, Allgäu and Illertal Regions.  Bad Saulgau, the cure and spa town is situated in the midst of Upper Swabia between Ulm and the Lake of Constance.  With its 18000 inhabitants, the small town lies within the Baroque road and is surrounded by soft hills and green sweeping meadows. This leads past churches and chapels decorated with frescoes and magnificent buildings.

In 1239, Saulgau received its Town Charter after belonging to Austria for 600 years. About 1299, the Habsburger won the regime and engraved their mark strongly in the town history, in such a way that, even today, visitors can find remnants of the old city wall and lovingly renovated timbered houses. More than 200 years ago, the nuns, inhabitants of the Franziskan Monastery, discovered a spring of mineral-rich waters and invited guests for cures. In the course of time, the quiet town was transformed into an officially recognised health resort and in year 2000 received the “bath” title.

Guided Tours

Upper Swabian Baroque Road
The sign of the Upper Swabian Baroque Road is a yellow fresco on a green background. Three routes with different travel characters open up the Baroque Kingdom. On the main route, coming from Ulm, you can find the magnificent monastery libraries of Wiblingen and Bad Schussenried, as well as the former Benedict Abbey in Ochsenhausen, the Basilika in Weingarten and the magnificent, beautiful village church of Steinhausen. The east route presents the Bavarian Baroque variety in Buxheim, Ottobeuren and Memmingen. The west route from Donautal to the Upper Swabia and Linzgau further to Lake of Constance also introduces us to the  Siessen Monastery,  Meßkirch Castle ,Salem Castle, and also the famous pilgrimage church “Birnau”. An architecture which reflects heaven on earth is revealed through these oppulent forms and living colours. This is Baroque, the way it is found in Upper Swabia. We wish you a warm welcome!
